Maria Withell-Goldsack - MLD Practitioner and Osteopath

Maria Withell-Goldsack

MLD Practitioner · Registered Osteopath · B.Ost(Hons) · GOsC
Maria is a registered osteopath who has trained in Manual Lymphatic Drainage as a complementary specialism. Her calm, unhurried approach is well suited to MLD, which requires patience and a light, precise touch. She works with patients managing lymphoedema, those recovering from surgery, and anyone seeking the general health benefits of lymphatic stimulation.
Because Maria also practices osteopathy at the clinic, she can coordinate your treatment across both disciplines where that is helpful — for example, combining structural osteopathic work with MLD for post-surgical recovery.

What MLD can help with

MLD is a specialist technique with a range of clinical applications. It is not the same as a conventional massage and works on a different system entirely.
Lymphoedema
Primary and secondary lymphoedema, including lymphoedema following cancer treatment or surgery. MLD is one of the main treatments recommended for managing this condition.
Post-surgical recovery
Reduction of post-operative swelling and fluid retention. MLD can help speed recovery, reduce the risk of complications, and improve comfort after surgery. Maria works with surgeon guidelines where applicable.
Immune support and detoxification
The lymphatic system plays a central role in immune function. Regular MLD can support the body's natural detoxification processes and is used by patients managing chronic fatigue, sinus congestion, and general low immunity.
General wellbeing
Many patients use MLD as a regular wellness treatment. It is deeply relaxing, reduces fluid retention, and leaves most people feeling lighter and less congested. It combines well with osteopathy and massage therapy.

What to expect

MLD uses very light, rhythmic movements applied to the skin to stimulate lymphatic flow. The pressure is much lighter than conventional massage and should feel gentle and relaxing throughout.
Your first session includes a brief consultation to understand your health history, any relevant conditions or recent surgery, and your goals for treatment. Sessions are 45 minutes.
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Stay well hydrated before and after treatment. Most patients feel deeply relaxed during the session and lighter afterwards.

Treatments that work well alongside MLD

Osteopathy
Maria also practices osteopathy at the clinic. For patients recovering from surgery or managing structural issues alongside fluid retention, combining both treatments in the same appointment or across sessions can be particularly effective.

Massage Therapy
Conventional massage and MLD serve different purposes and can complement each other well. Massage works on muscle and soft tissue; MLD works on the lymphatic system. Many patients use both for a more comprehensive approach to recovery and wellbeing.

Acupuncture
Acupuncture can support immune function, reduce inflammation, and help with the stress and fatigue that often accompanies conditions treated with MLD. A number of our patients combine both treatments regularly.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle, specialised technique that stimulates the lymphatic system to reduce swelling, support immune function, and promote natural detoxification. It uses light, rhythmic movements to encourage lymph flow rather than the deeper pressure used in conventional massage.
MLD is effective for lymphoedema, post-surgical swelling, chronic fatigue, immune support, facial swelling, sinus congestion, and general wellness. It is particularly beneficial after cancer treatment or surgery affecting lymphatic function.
MLD is extremely gentle and should not be painful. The pressure used is much lighter than conventional massage. Most patients find it deeply relaxing and some fall asleep during treatment.
This depends on your condition. Acute swelling may need 2 to 3 sessions per week initially. Chronic conditions often benefit from weekly sessions. For general wellness, monthly treatments are typical. Maria will discuss this with you at your first appointment.
